MOCA presents a 4-lecture series just in time for the new season of art exhibitions and fairs. This intensive training course introduces the essential issues that dominate art today. Led by Dr. Adrienne Von Lates, Education Curator, the lectures are designed to give participants the knowledge they need to interpret and appreciate art from 1990 to today. Participants will receive a list of artists and a bibliography, including online resources, to learn more about the artists or themes. No previous knowledge of contemporary art is required. This week's topics are: Modernist forms, political content; humor; the pathetic aesthetic; small scale, big ideas; sewing, knitting, crafting; childhood revisited. Each lecture is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Seating is limited so reservations are recommended.

Legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion will perform at Jazz at MOCA, a free concert held the last Friday of every month - rain or shine - in front of the museum. Figueroa is recognized as one of the music world's most sought after percussionists, providing the framework for hundreds of hits. He has played with numerous distinguished jazz, Latin and pop performers in his career including Miles Davis, Dave Sanborn, Quincy Jones, Marc Anthony, Maria Carey, and Whitney Houston. In 2002 he debuted his own band—Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion, an ensemble that fuses different rhythm forms with Latin sounds to create an exuberant and joyful display of high-energy jazz. Jazz at MOCA is sponsored by Starbucks Coffee Company and the City of North Miami. MOCA's galleries will be open by donation from 7 to 10 p.m.
