Video Art on 36th Street

According to Dave E. Smalley, "The survival of the fittest is the ageless law of nature, but the fittest are rarely the strong. The fittest are those endowed with the qualifications for adaptation, the ability to accept the inevitable and conform to the unavoidable, to harmonize with existing or changing conditions."

Having earned a reputation inside Miami's Wynwood Art District as one of its coolest streets with various art galleries, Wynwood's 36th Street brings it on one more time with a hot group video art show titled Survival of the Fittest curated by Milcho.

From love to war to plastic surgery, this video art show intents to portrait the different ways in which human beings struggle to survive in a society culturally oriented towards an enormously defended and accepted narcissism. The idea is to create a series of video art events with highly philosophical themes with the purpose of driving people towards a deep reflection on the most important current issues of our society. The first show of the series took place on July 12, 2008 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Being the "last" or "first" street of each district - whichever way you wish to view it -Wynwood 36 Street has become the unifying link between Miami's Design District and Wynwood Art District. Art Rouge Gallery, Dot Fiftyone Gallery, Milou Gallery, Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Damian B. Gallery, Independent Visual Art Gallery and Urban Icons Marketing are some of the venues working together to bring this project to live. Each gallery will contribute to the show with their own video art installations and receptions. The guests will be able to walk the street and enjoy what each space has created for the occasion. Visitors are suggested to park in Midtown Mall, which is 5 minutes walking distance.

The main stage will be situated at Art Rouge Gallery located at 46 NW 36 Street in loft 3. Some of the participating artists for this show are Hank Willis Thomas in Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Tobias Stretch in Milou Gallery, Juan Carlos Zaldivar in Dot Fiftyone Gallery, Adrian Baschuk, Daniel Fiorda, Amalia Caputo, and the art collective La Tintota (a collaboration of 5 artists from Brazil, Venezuela and USA) in Art Rouge Gallery and Urban Icons Marketing space.

Amalia Caputo, who will contribute to the art show with her most recent work titled AmBlondiegymbomb - a sympathetic/pathetic character who gets ready for her daily workout, says the following "in my recent photo and video art-works, the use of the body addresses the concerns of memory, cultural icons and personal experience. My work aims to convey the contemporary obsession for a perfect body related to physical body modifications, surgery or implants that we live in."

Another highlight is the participation of Adrian Baschuk, who has reported for Current TV, CNN and ABC from various hotspots and war zones; shooting, producing, and editing his own material. He has embedded in Iraq, snuck in to North Korea, reported from inside Hugo Chavez's place, trekked Tibet, penetrated the Maoists, interviewed Hezbollah officials in Beirut, uncovered smuggling routes in Colombia, and so on. In his installation, Adrian will showcase rare exclusive footage of his meetings with terrorist elements. Audience will be able to see his firsthand run ins with members from Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Al Qaeda in Jordan and the Maoist rebels in Nepal.
