Crossing Cultural Frontiers

Friday, November 30
8 pm

Join these innovative composers in journeys from one country, and one culture, to another. Greek-French-Romanian composer Iannis Xenakis explores the Persephone myth by taking six percussionists where they've never performed before: inside and around the audience. Argentine native Alejandro Viñao designs pulsating rhythms with twists and turns in his homage to an experimentalist American composer. U.S. expatriate George Antheil called himself the "bad boy of music," and with good reason. Originally scored for 16 player pianos, percussion and airplane propellers, his Ballet mécanique caused fistfights at its European premiere. This performance by the New World Symphony Percussion Consort of Ballet mécanique is presented in conjunction with The Wolfsonian-FIU. Michael Linville conducts. Tickets are $10.
